Content by Sarah Martin

Homes for Sale in Friendship Park, Pittsburgh - Friendship Park is unique in that it is a completely residential neighborhood full of large Victorian houses in the East End of Pittsburgh. The Pittsburgh neighborhoods that border it are Garfield, East Liberty, Shadyside, and Bloomfield. Today, Friendship Park is an ideal place to reside for a variety of individuals and families, especially those who want to live close to Pittsburgh’s many universities and hospitals.

The history of Friendship Park dates back to the 18th century. Casper Taub, a settler during the American Revolution, claimed the Friendship, Bloomfield and Garfield areas from the native Delaware tribe. Taub’s daughter Elizabeth married Joseph Conrad Winebiddle and ultimately their daughter Kitty Winebiddle inherited the area of Friendship. The neighborhood was designed as a streetcar suburb meaning the area was built with streetcar-based transit as its backbone.

The geography of Friendship is very flat, which made it easy for streetcars to transport residents from their large, square Victorian homes to the business districts in Pittsburgh. The extravagant Victorian architectural details in most of the neighborhood’s homes make it obvious that most of the residents of early Friendship Park were very prosperous and mostly professional-class families.

However, a lot of these homes are now multi-unit apartments and are often owned by landlords. Many homes have undergone multiple renovations, but it is common for the architectural details like stained-glass windows, high ceilings, and intricate woodwork have been preserved.

Despite having no businesses, the Friendship neighborhood still attracts a strong community. The Friendship Preservation Group works to promote a sense of community and share all that is great about Friendship with Pittsburgh.

Some of the most popular events in the neighborhood include the Victorian House Tour and community Yard Sale. Residents of Friendship stay up-to-date with The Bulletin. This is a monthly newspaper that comments and reports news from Friendship, Bloomfield, Garfield, Lawrenceville, and East Liberty. Check out all of the events Friendship offers by viewing their events calendar.
